The migrant organizations form Philippines and Asia started to commemorate 18th December as the International Migrants Day in 1997. On 18 December 1990, the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The convention is regarded as the outcome of long struggle of migrants’ right groups and negotiations among countries.

The first International Migrants Day was first celebrated in the EU building in Manila in Philippines with the local administrates, the foreign diplomats and the representatives of international nongovernmental associations. On December 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants.

Our country is located on one of the most important migration ways, has been witnessing and hosting huge migration events. In recent years, the increasing economic power and stability has caused our country to become center of attention. On the one hand, the political instability in our environment has been the initiator reason for migrations into our country.

With the help of the Law no: 6458 on “Foreigners and International Protection” the legal deficiencies on migrants has been eliminated. In the frame of the Item 103 of the law, the newly founded directorate General of Migration Management under the Ministry of Interior has been authorized to apply policies and strategies about migration, which is an essential step for our country.

The Migration and Local Governments Application and Research Centre of our university wants to celebrate the International Migrants Day and to indicate that we are ready to give academic support to all of the studies on migrants in our country.
